Fall: establish a baseline and workable routine
Collect recent classwork, name one academic priority, and map the normal week. For SHSAT applicants, check the current NYC Public Schools process and practice environment. If a seasonal sport is being considered, verify whether the published session is already underway and whether joining is possible. A course start date is not evidence of a seat still being open.
Winter: use the break to address one gap
Pick a skill that repeatedly interrupts current work, such as reading instructions or handling fractions. A break can give room for short consistent practice, but it should not become an overloaded replacement school day. If requesting holiday tutoring or a camp, confirm current availability rather than relying on an announcement from a past year.
Spring: align review with the actual course
Use school feedback to identify what needs reinforcement before relevant assessments. For grades 3–8 and Regents, refer to current NYSED and school information. For SAT planning, confirm the intended test date with College Board and leave time for official practice and error review. Separate course completion goals from test-registration tasks so neither is missed.
Summer: retain essentials and explore an interest
Keep a manageable reading habit and brief math review around the skills already learned. A camp or enrichment class can add social and creative experiences without requiring every day to be academic. Compare the actual session dates, venue, daily routine, and supplies. The published Aurora Genesis summer program page describes the offering; future-season dates and prices need confirmation.
Review monthly rather than filling every gap
At a monthly family check-in, ask which goal improved, what is still difficult, and whether the schedule can continue. Remove an activity that no longer serves the plan before adding another. Keep an official-deadline list beside the learning goals and check it regularly. A simpler schedule with repeated independent practice is easier to maintain and evaluate.
